Excellent place for a date lunch. We had a starting pairing of the fried green tomatoes and shrimp gumbo. Both were exquisite and the tomatoes came with a cheese topping that worked so well. Our second pairing was the Mac and cheese with the short rib. Cannot recommend the short rib enough!!!! It was so delicious and so creative as it came with a creamed corn and pickled peppers that made for a light, sweet, summer dish. Finally we had the special of the day for dessert, a lemon tart with blueberry compote. All in all, it was an exceptional experience.
I was on a serious hunt for GREAT gumbo in New Orleans. And my first stop would be at a much-praised Uptown spot on Magazine Street, La Petite Grocery. I’d previously sampled great bites from Chef/Owner Justin Devillier (2016 James Beard Award winner for Best Chef: South) at a guest dinner in Charleston, as well as from Exec Chef Joseph Tiedmann at a Farm Dinner in West Palm Beach. But this was my first visit to “the mother ship”, housed in a historic century-old building. I decided to start with the Fried Gulf Oysters - Sofrito Purée, Chowchow & Pickled Sweet Peppers, and was glad I did. There’s no shortage of oyster dishes in NOLA, and this was a big winner. Next up, when in the South, why not order Fried Green Tomatoes - Burrata, Country Ham & Oregano? Another terrific plate, perhaps the best FGT dish I’ve had! Finally, my “target dish” arrived, the Shrimp & Okra Gumbo with Andouille, Collard Greens & Popcorn Rice. Really, really good. Very dark roux, as I like, and with plenty of seafood flavor, but more depth as well. Definitely one of the best gumbos I’ve ever enjoyed. I was happy to visit La Petite Grocery at lunch, where they offer up the full menu available for dinner too, of course. Highly recommended, and I can’t wait to return to try much much more.
Our first dinner in New Orleans with family and it was a good choice. The staff were friendly and accommodating fitting us in after a short wait at an outside table. The waitress was delightful and helpful with recommendations for drinks and food. We were enjoying the evening so the slow delivery of the meal was just fine. Many excellent choices on the menu and each item we had was excellent. This was a good experience and do make a reservation.
Our overall experience was lovely. The restaurant wasn’t very busy when we arrived for our early dinner. Which was nice, it wasn’t crowded or loud throughout our dinner. Our server was attentive, helpful, and friendly. Drinks: Bee’s Knees: this was a nice flavor combination. Not too sweet and went well with dinner. 3.5/5 Stonewaller: this was much more cinnamon forward than expected so it wasn’t my favorite. 2.5/5 Starters: Baguette with whipped butter: this was served fresh and warm. Great crust on the bread with wonderfully whipped butter. I highly recommend. 5/5 Tuna Crudo: this was a special and it was good. I didn’t love all the flavor combinations together and I wish it had been served a bit colder. 3.5/5 Dumplings: this was also a special and it was very tasty. We enjoyed this a lot. 4/5 Dinner: Red Fish: Fish was seasoned well and cooked well. I felt like it was served with a bit more broth than I expected. 4/5 Roasted Chicken Breast: cooked very well and seasoned well. Flavors were exactly as expected and straightforward. 4/5 Sides: Roasted broccoli: roasted very well. Exactly as expected, wish it had been seasoned a bit more 4/5 Mac and cheese: very good Mac and cheese. Wonderful sauce. 4.5/5 Dessert: carrot cake: this was probably the best part of the meal. When we went they said it was a special that was expected to be added to the menu. And it really should be 5/5
La Petite Grocery absolutely delivered one of the best dining experiences we had in New Orleans. From the moment we walked in, everything was seamless, they seated us right away and the service was outstanding throughout the entire meal. The food was next level. The french fries were, no exaggeration, some of the best I’ve ever had in my life. Perfectly crisp, seasoned just right, and completely addictive. The rabbit and the redfish were both to die for, easily the stars of the table. If I went back, there’s no question I’d order both of those again. Everything from the atmosphere to the execution felt dialed in. This is one of those places where you leave already thinking about when you can come back. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a top-tier meal in New Orleans.
