My favorite cafe, by far, that I’ve visited so far in NoLa. Gorgeous part of town, stunning, elevated decor, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and an unreal menu of food and drink items. I had a flat white there and an iced strawberry matcha to go, in addition to a variety of pastries— and everything was just beyond delicious. There wasn’t a single thing I found “just okay”—it was all excellent. The staff was friendly and kind; the baristas are meticulous, and I’m just sorry I didn’t have time to visit Ayu multiple times on my trip.
We went in there and CLEARED. Everything was amazing and my litmus test is the croissant pastry. We had it in the boudin roll and it was so flaky and crispy in all the right places. The people were so kind and helpful. I saw a pizza something that was still on the rack and they offered to slice it for us early. Would absolutely be back.
I came across Ayu Bakehouse while exploring Frenchmen Street and was pleasantly surprised. From the outside, it almost looks like a house, but the outdoor seating and small sign draw you in. Inside, it’s a cozy and inviting space filled with the aroma of fresh baked goods. They offer a nice variety of both sweet and savory pastries, all beautifully displayed. The staff were friendly and welcoming, which made the visit even more enjoyable. I stopped in for an iced tea to cool off from the warm weather, and it was the perfect quick break during my walk. I didn’t try the pastries this time, but they looked incredible—definitely something I’d come back for. A charming little spot worth checking out if you’re in the area.
Visiting New Orleans from Southern California, I made a point to stop by Ayu and it quickly became one of the highlights of my trip. On my first visit (March 18), I was immediately drawn to the bakery’s thoughtful design and warm color palette. I ordered a chocolate babka knot, a cinnamon roll, and an iced cocopresso. I stayed a while to enjoy the cinnamon roll, which was fresh, soft, and perfectly balanced in sweetness. I returned on March 23 for a second visit, eager to try more of their menu. This time I picked up a coconut pastry, another chocolate babka knot, jalapeño cornbread cookies, and (again) an iced cocopresso. Every item reflected the same level of care and quality. What really elevated the experience, though, was the atmosphere. The cashier was genuinely friendly, and we had a great conversation after I mentioned I’m a baker and a creative person with a wide range of interests. While sitting and enjoying my food, I also struck up a conversation with a local French teacher who noticed I was reading The Art of War, a small but memorable moment that added to the charm of the place. Ayu Bakehouse stands out not just for its fresh, thoughtfully made (and often organic) breads and pastries, but also for its inviting, community-oriented vibe. It does get busy, but there’s some outdoor seating in the front if you’re lucky enough to grab a spot. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in New Orleans.
TLDR: exceptional bakery with some really stellar offerings. We visited a few times during our drip to New Orleans and were very happy with our experience. We tried the tiramisu au lait, the egg salad sandwich (which was my favorite), the jalapeño cornbread cookie, and a few other things. Everything was absolutely fabulous, the flavours were spot on. I love that they have a bit of a different take on everything they make.
