Description
This tour begins at the French Market, offering insight into New Orleans’ culinary heritage. The route then continues to the old U.S. Mint and the grand mansions of Esplanade Avenue, showcasing the city's past and enduring vibrancy.
Next, walk through St. Louis Cemetery #3, notable for its above-ground tombs due to the city’s below-sea-level terrain. You will see tombs of famous residents and learn about New Orleans’ burial customs.
The tour proceeds along Bayou St. John, where you can view historic houses dating back to the late 1700s. Passing through City Park, you will see the antique carousel and centuries-old live oak trees.
A highlight is the visit to Besthoff Sculpture Gardens, an eight-acre park featuring sculptures, walking paths, water features, and moss-draped oaks around two lagoons.
Along the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, the tour explains the levee system and points out the longest Causeway Bridge. The journey continues uptown, including stops near Carrollton, Tulane and Loyola Universities, and the historic 160-year-old streetcar line on St. Charles Avenue.
