Description

Sure, we are unique but that’s not the only reason people flock to visit our ancestors in their final resting places. We are somewhat unusual in our “recycling and rotation” of our dead in our family tombs. Room for 2 coffins doesn’t stop us from burying hundreds in that same tomb. Yes, you read that right. Have you heard these stories of what we do? Do you think we are macabre or are we are doing exactly what should be done? You will find out on this tour. You might be very surprised. We would love to show you our Cities of the Dead, as they are called. We would love to allow you to visit our actual family tombs and tell you, not only how we bury, but also the stories of who’s inside. We keep the light on for our ancestors who are long gone. We never stop telling their stories. For this hour and a half tour of one of our most beloved cemeteries we encourage you to bring a small rock or flower to leave behind in honor of those who have passed. (Note: THERE IS NO BATHROOM on the premises) The tour departs from the corner of Moss Street and Esplanade Avenue, directly on Bayou St John. There is a Shell Station on the opposite side of the street. The tour ends at the gates of the cemetery 90 minutes after it began. Your Living Legacy guide will almost bring the dead back to life with stories and visuals that only someone with ancestors buried in our cemeteries can do.
